About this wall

Why this exists

Stroke can change more than the body. It can change identity, confidence, relationships, language, work, family life, and the way a person feels in the world.

I created the Stroke Awareness Wall because many parts of recovery are difficult to explain. Survivors, families, and carepartners often carry experiences that do not fit neatly into medical records, appointments, or everyday conversations.

This wall is a place to share those experiences without needing to make them polished, complete, or easy for everyone else to understand.

Inspired by recovery communities

Communities such as Stroke Onward have helped many stroke survivors explore the emotional side of recovery, including rebuilding identity, purpose, confidence, and connection.

The Stroke Awareness Wall was created to make space for those stories and to help people feel a little less alone in whatever stage of recovery they are experiencing.

A note from the creator

I am a stroke survivor.

During my own recovery, I found that some of the hardest parts were not always visible: identity, confidence, work, relationships, and making sense of what had happened.

I was also carrying a lot of frustration. There were things I wished I could have said to the medical professionals involved in my care, moments where I felt unheard, misunderstood, or left trying to explain experiences that did not fit neatly into a diagnosis, appointment, or test result.

The Stroke Awareness Wall was created to make space for those experiences. Not just the medical story of stroke, but the human one. The parts that are difficult to measure, difficult to explain, and often difficult to share.

My hope is that survivors, loved ones, and carepartners can use this space to tell the stories that matter to them, in whatever way feels right. Whether that is a full story, a few sentences, a name, a badge, or simply a small sign that says, “I am here.”

You matter. What you are going through is hard.

This is a small personal project created by a stroke survivor. If you have questions, suggestions, or simply want to reach out, you can contact me at dan@strokeawarenesswall.org.
